Professional stand up paddler Sean Poynter and I met by chance a little more than a year ago after I responded to a Craigslist ad he had posted looking for a sports photographer to work with in the San Diego area. I had never photographed stand up paddling before, and after visiting Sean’s website: http://www.seanpoynter.com to do a little research, I was informed there was way more to the sport than just cruising around on flat water. Shredding big waves on a SUP is possible. A swell was scheduled to hit the following couple of days and by the surf reports it looked as if Oceanside Pier would be the money spot shoot. Here is what went down.

Paddling out is harder than it looks on a SUP because you have to make it up and over the waves instead of going under them like a traditional surfer would.

This was my first SUP picture that ended up getting published in two magazines: Stand Up Journal, Summer 2013 & SUP Stand Up Paddle Magazine, Mar./April ’2013. Psyched!
