San Diego Backcountry Rock Climbing, Corte Madera

The road to Corte Madero is a rough one.

The road to Corte Madera mountain (left side of frame) is half of the adventure and requires a 4×4 vehicle.

One of the things I love most about rock climbing is the exploratory aspect of it. Lately, Geneva and I have been trying to explore as many new climbing spots in the San Diego area as possible. We have been hearing some really good things about Corte Madera  so we decided to give it a try. Located about an hour east of San Diego off Interstate 8, Corte Madera offers a true southern California backcountry experience.

The trail to Corte Madera is moderate difficulty and took us maybe an hour and 20 minutes to reach the base of the first cliff.

We saw lots of interesting boulders to climb on the hike. It was always a question of should we just climb here or keep going?

We had the cliffs to ourselves and didn’t see a single person all day.
